In the days when Terik was just a handful of houses by the river, there lived an old librarian named Kanan. His library wasn't large or imposing, just four stone walls protecting from the wind the scrolls he had collected throughout his life. Every morning, Kanan swept dust from the shelves, arranged the tomes in their place, and waited. He always waited.
One stormy day, when the river threatened to overflow, a badly wounded and soaked foreign knight arrived at his door. The warrior could barely stand, his armor was dented and his sword, broken. Without saying a word, he collapsed on the threshold. Kanan dragged him inside and tended his wounds. For days, the knight raved about lost battles and fallen companions.
When he finally awoke, the warrior wept for his defeat. As the days passed, while he recovered, Danthor Estei and the old librarian forged an unexpected friendship. 'I was arrogant,' the knight confessed one afternoon. 'I thought strength was enough. I didn't study my enemy, didn't prepare strategies, only trusted in my sword. My arrogance cost good men their lives.' Kanan listened in silence and then, with slow steps, went to the highest shelf. He brought down three heavy tomes: war treatises by ancient generals, studies on combat tactics, reflections on the art of victory.
Danthor Estei decided to stay in Terik. He found lodging near the river and each afternoon, without fail, he came to the library. There he read for hours, took notes, drew diagrams on wax tablets. Kanan watched him transform: he was no longer just a warrior, he was becoming a strategist. When spring came, Danthor announced it was time to depart for new battles. Kanan gave him one last book. 'Knowledge,' he said, 'is the most powerful weapon.'
Years later, songs spoke of the knight Estei who never lost another battle. But more importantly: Danthor returned to Terik, this time to stay. He built his home, started a family, and his children grew up among those cobbled streets. Thus began the story of the Estei in Terik, a house founded not on conquest, but on wisdom learned in a small library by the river.
